Gifting for Someone You've Never Met
Share
A new hire starts in three weeks. A new client just signed. A new vendor is about to become a big part of your operations. In all three cases, you're expected to send a gift to someone you've never had a conversation with.
No allergy list. No idea what they collect, drink, or do on weekends. Just a name and an address.
It's a real problem, and it doesn't have to end in a generic branded pen.
Aim for Universally Appreciated, Not Personally Perfect
You can't personalize a gift for someone you don't know yet, and trying too hard usually backfires. What you can do is choose things that work for almost anyone: good coffee, something sweet that isn't overly polarizing, a useful item they'll actually keep on their desk. The goal isn't to guess their exact taste. It's to avoid anything that only works for a narrow slice of people.
Skip Anything Too Personal
Save the deeply personalized gifts for people you actually know. For a first gift, steer clear of anything tied to a specific hobby, body type, or lifestyle assumption. A gift that assumes too much can feel presumptuous instead of thoughtful.
Let the Note Do the Personal Work
Since the box can't be fully personalized yet, the note can carry that weight instead. "Welcome to the team, we're glad you're here" or "Excited to start this partnership" does more relationship-building than trying to force a generic box into feeling custom.
Ask Early, Personalize Later
The smartest move is to build the ask into your process. A new-hire welcome form or a client intake questionnaire can include one line about dietary restrictions or preferences. Next time, that first gift can be a lot more specific.
A safe, well-chosen first gift might include:
- Custom-labeled Bean Cycle coffee, a safe bet for almost any coffee drinker
- Mary's Mountain cookies, easy to share and easy to like
- A locally made mug that becomes part of someone's daily routine
- A note that's warm, specific to the moment, and not trying too hard
You don't need to know someone to make a strong first impression. You just need to choose carefully.
